Finishing Touches to Make Your Résumé Kickass
5 tips to create a résumé that stands out in the pile!

We’ve seen all the information out there about writing resumes and by this time you’ve probably read it too.  So if you can barely spell résumé and are just starting out, it’s probably time to bookmark us for now and visit your career center or one of our sponsors (the site has to pay bills you know).   However, if you have a résumé and are ready for 5 ideas to make it shine, please read on.

Have a professional e-mail address. Italianstallion819 or Crazychk86 were fun names in high school, but they show immaturity to employers. Your school gave you an e-mail account - use it!  Even if you do not check the school e-mail system regularly, you can talk to the college techies to have school e-mail forwarded to your Princess4Life account.  Just remember to reply to any job related e-mail from your school e-mail account, because your recruiter does not want to hear from pimpin4life.

Google yourself! You already know the job marketplace is extremely competitive.  Don't let something stupid online keep you from a kickass career.  Google your full name in quotes (try this without your middle name, with only your middle initial, and lastly with your full legal name).  If you have a popular name like Jennifer Smith this might be tough.  Try using your name and high school, college, or hometown for searching. The fact that you got 9th place in the 8th grade math competition is okay, but the fact that your frat has you listed as "the walking disease" is not.

It's time for a Myspace and Facebook overhaul.  While still in the realm of public space, studies have shown that no company is too big or too small to do a little online investigating.  Your future employer can have kids around your age that may be asked to find out about you from your profiles.   Once again, think "would I want my parents, teachers, or new boss to see these pictures/stories?"  We shouldn't have to say more.  Hint: for a quick fix set your profile to private so only your friends can view your dirt!

Have an appropriate voicemail.  "A is for Academics, B is for Beer, one of those reasons is why I'm not here… BEEP… leave a message."  While this classic gave several people a chuckle through your college years, it will leave an employer angry and could immediately result in your resume being filed in the garbage.  Be professional and keep it short; you never get a second chance to make a first impression.  We also suggest getting your own phone.  This way you can rest assured your prospective employer’s call will not get answered by your roommate who can burp the alphabet.

Spelling, grammar, and common sense. We thought we'd share at least one piece of advice that had to do specifically with the résumé. While running this site, you would not believe the amount of spelling and grammatical errors we see on your résumés. Everyone knows that no one is perfect, even the gods at Kickass Careers probably have some errors on their pages.  But, for this one page which sells yourself to the employer, you need to be flawless.  Leave your ego at the door, because spell check alone will not cut it.  Ask anyone and everyone to read and reread your résumé.  Your roommates, mom, professors, drinking buddies (okay, maybe not them…), even your kid sister who’s in high

school (sometimes she can be the most brutal), will catch things the others might miss.  We’ve intentionally left this part last.  We want to impress upon you the importance of this part or else your résumé will definitely be filed…in the trash!

Please remember that without a successful resume your chances of even getting an interview are low.  Build a solid foundation for your success.  If you still need more help sign up for our premium service where real professionals review your resume and help you find opportunities you may have overlooked.
